I took these photographs as slides on my reliable Nikon FM in the early 1980's while living on St. Marks Place, between 1st Ave. and Avenue A.

The neighborhood was going through some immense change, and these photos capture a bygone day - of the older (largely Ukrainian) community, the younger punk rockers and hipsters - and the pockets of desolation (both physical and spiritual) that surrounded them both.
